Australian Foreign Fighters Legislation Excessive.

I share the community horror at the brutal terrorism exhibited by ISIS/ISIL including radicalised Australians there in northern Syria & Iraq but the proposed laws seem to me to be cracking an acorn with a sledgehammer. Neither I nor my family is from that part of the world, however I can imagine what it would feel like were I to have close innocent family there being threatened by those terrorists! Suppose you were visiting family in northern Syria right now when ISIS militants attacked the village you were at and you attempted to defend against them – that would make you a criminal in the eyes of these new laws. Surely the focus should be on commission of war crimes or joining a declared militia rather than being in a declared area? Furthermore, why is western air power not right now implementing exclusion zones over the Kurdish towns & villages near Turkey from which hundreds of thousands are fleeing in terror right now? The terrorists are openly deploying major military assets against civilians and would be vulnerable to air power.
