Mercury the New Asbestos!

Not that long ago the Government banned the traditional incandescent light globe – a technology that had been in use since Edison. Clearly they did not perform a Whole-of-Lifecycle Risk Analysis because nearly all of the new mini fluorescent low energy light globes that now stock the shelves in shops contain the extremely toxic chemical Mercury. If the globes break, you are exposed to a significant immediate mercury vapour health risk and you need to get straight out of the vicinity. Yet most people dispose of them in the household rubbish! The EPA depot, some councils and hardware stores like Mitre 10 will (at some risk to their own people) take them for safe disposal but most people, as with old paint tins, do not bother. How many deaths, how many lawsuits are going to arise from this monumental public policy mistake? Pity they did not hold off until LED technology caught up as it is starting to now. They need to stick prominent posters on EVERY garbage bin lid and REQUIRE all stores that sell the globes to accept used new technology globes for safe disposal ASAP.
